The Revolutionary Trend of Billiard Cue History

The sport of pool and billiards related games, can be traced all the way back to the Renaissance period beginning in approximately 1100 A.D. From looking at old paintings, sculptures, illustrated manuscripts and tapestries from this period it appears to have been very popular even back then. From the poor, all the way up to the rich and royal, this was a game everyone adored. It was played indoors and out, on tables and on the ground. It was everywhere.

1. The First Innovation: Mace & Mallets
In the beginning, pool tables were finely decorated in luxurious detail. They were covered in a variety of ornaments. Even precious gems were used in the crafting of some tables.

The complicated game rules and showy billiard rooms were all exclusive to the rich European nobility. They gradually started using highly decorated maces that symbolized status and position rather than to facilitate aim and shot.

2. The Second Innovation: Wood Cue
For more than 100 years, the mace was gradually replaced with what we now recognize as a wood cue. The sports natural evolution led to using a straighter, longer, narrower wooden shaft due to its good transmission of energy, better accuracy and feel when playing on a table. These purely wooden cues were far from perfect however. Problems with the inevitable warping, splitting and generally high rate of depreciation over time had people looking out for the next helpful innovation in cue technology.

3. The Third Innovation: Fiberglass over Wood Cue
It wasn't until the mid 80' when fiberglass-wrapped wood cues started becoming the norm, extending the life and value of wood cues. This helped solve some of the warping and weathering problems associated with all-wood cues. Close, but no cigar. Some things still had to be done to improve it further.

4. The Fourth Innovation: Titanium Cue

Titanium cues put to rest all the previous shortcomings of wood and never fails to intrigue a crowd of on lookers. Golf clubs, tennis rackets and skis...etc., have all phased out the use of wood long ago, and instead have started incorporating Titanium into their designs. Titanium has no doubt been a milestone in the history of sports technology.
